SWAG视频 climate and justice teach-in illuminates how climate change hits home
Hundreds gathered on the Biddeford Campus on Wednesday, March 30, to engage in multiple conversations about the state of climate change and environmental justice, as the SWAG视频 hosted the One-Night Teach-In on Climate and Justice.
SWAG视频 joined more than 300 colleges and universities across the globe as part of Worldwide Teach-In on Climate and Justice, an initiative of the , led by Bard College. The collaborative event was produced in partnership with SWAG视频's Center for Excellence in Collaborative Education (CECE), with funding from The Climate Initiative and the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust.
The teach-in focused on seven panels related to climate change, presented by dozens of SWAG视频 faculty, students, and guest speakers from across the University, plus a keynote address by Rev. Lennox Yearwood Jr., president of the Hip Hop Caucus.
Founded by Yearwood in 2004, the Hip Hop Caucus focuses on addressing core issues impacting underserved and vulnerable communities, with programs and campaigns that support solution-driven community organizing led by today鈥檚 young leaders.
Yearwood began the event by telling the audience how he became involved in climate activism following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, which ravaged his hometown of New Orleans.
鈥淚 watched poor people 鈥 Black and Brown people 鈥 drown to death in the richest country in the world,鈥 he reflected. 鈥淲hen our planet turns against us 鈥 that is the horrific consequences of the climate crisis. 鈥 and the one thing about this crisis we鈥檙e in is that it鈥檚 a real crisis that we as humanity have to solve.鈥
In solving the crisis, Yearwood said, people must seek climate justice 鈥 the notion that climate change can have differing adverse socioeconomic and public health effects on underserved populations.
鈥淲e are on a pathway for destruction if we do not break down the silos that impact other communities,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e will not be successful if we as humans do not come together. Climate justice is racial justice, and racial justice is climate justice.鈥
And he said young people鈥檚 voices are more important than ever in driving the change.
鈥淲hen young people say they鈥檙e afraid, we must listen to them,鈥 he remarked. 鈥淚t is more than likely none of us in this room will be here in 100 years, but what will be behind will be your vigor and your energy and your passion to solve this climate crisis.
鈥If we fail, then humanity fails,鈥 he added. 鈥淲e need this moment.鈥
Emma Jones (Marine Sciences, 鈥22) was one of a handful of students who participated in the panel discussions. She spoke about reckoning with climate injustice in coastal communities.
鈥淚 think it's important to talk about how human-induced climate change harms the ocean, which, in turn, harms vulnerable communities that usually have had little contribution to global warming,鈥 she said.
Jones said she was proud to present at the teach-in and engage with her peers to tackle this global issue.
鈥淚 think it鈥檚 important to have a student鈥檚 voice heard in these settings,鈥 Jones remarked. 鈥淲e have seen throughout history that college campuses are often the birthplaces of influential action. We may sometimes feel helpless when thinking about climate change, but, if enough of us band together to push for a significant shift in these business-as-usual trends, we can be the change we want to see.鈥
