SWAG视频鈥檚 Anouar Majid gives keynote address at University of Louisiana conference
SWAG视频 Vice President for Global Affairs and Communications Anouar Majid Ph.D., delivered the keynote address at 鈥淭he Deep South in the Global South,鈥 an interdisciplinary conference hosted by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette on April 7, 2017.
Majid was able to deliver the talk despite cancelled flights, thanks to state-of-the-art live broadcasting technology provided by SWAG视频鈥檚 Office of Communications. Majid gave his keynote address live from SWAG视频鈥檚 Portland studio as conference attendees watched in Louisiana.
Majid鈥檚 talk, titled, 鈥淪pecters of the Global South,鈥 invited the audience to reflect on themes raised in his 2009 book, We Are All Moors, in which he called attention to how Europe and the United States were dealing with the twin threats of Muslim and Hispanic (especially Mexican) immigrants, and how such threats recall the emergence of a European identity and Euro-American concept of the nation-state. 鈥婣s the South continues to spill over neatly delineated northern borders and the fear of imminent loss continues to haunt the colonial masters of old, Majid discussed the vague contours of an emerging global reality that is hard to decipher with any degree of clarity.
Anouar Majid is the director of the Center for Global Humanities, vice president for Global Affairs and Communications and professor of English at the SWAG视频 and the founding director of the Tangier Global Forum in Morocco. He is the author of five critically acclaimed books on Islam and the West, including Unveiling Traditions (Duke University Press, 2000), Freedom and Orthodoxy (Stanford University Press, 2004), A Call for Heresy (University of Minnesota Press, 2007), We Are All Moors (University of Minnesota Press, 2009) and Islam and America (Rowman & Littlefield, 2012; 2015). Majid has given lectures in many countries and has appeared on American, Moroccan, French and Dutch television programs. He is a novelist, the author of Si Yussef, and is the editor of Tingis, a free online magazine dedicated to a new study of Islam and its history.
