SWAG视频 College of Osteopathic Medicine hosts 17th annual research forum

COM students and faculty

On Friday, September 22, 2017, the SWAG视频 College of Osteopathic Medicine held its annual research forum. Now in its 17th year, this event included five oral presentations by first and second year medical students and 25 student poster presentations. Seventeen faculty judges evaluated the presentations, presenting awards for the top three clinical research projects and top three basic science research projects.  

The forum鈥檚 keynote speaker was Ron Korstanje, Ph.D., FAHA, assistant professor at The Jackson Laboratory; co-director of the Nathan Shock Center of Excellence in the Basic Biology of Aging; and project leader in the Center for Precision Genetics. Korstanje spoke on the topic of 鈥淭he Genetics of Aging: Worms, Mice, and Humans.鈥

Awards were given to the following student researchers:

Basic science research

First place

Celeste Bouchard: 鈥淚ncreased hepatic lipid accumulation caused by atypical anti-psychotics Olanzapine and Risperidone is associated with altered PPAR signaling鈥

Second place

Katherine Cone: 鈥淐haracterization of Delta/Mu Opioid Receptor Interactions in Assays of Pain-Depressed Operant Responding and Schedule-Controlled Rate Suppression鈥  

Third place

Nate Mullen: 鈥淚nduction of 尾-Lactamase Activity and Decreased 尾-Lactam Susceptibility by CO2 in Clinical Bacterial Isolates鈥 

Clinical research projects

First place

Robyn Reese: 鈥淐-TraC Boston: Transitional Care for Veterans with COPD or CHF鈥

Second place

Victoria Schwartz: 鈥淐haracterization Adolescent and Familial Response to Interventional Efforts During the Acute Post-Trauma Phase of Adolescents at Risk for Persistent PTSD鈥

Third place

Madhuri Garg: 鈥淪upportive or Stigmatizing: Health Professionals鈥 Attitudes in Caring for Substance Users in Maine鈥
