The College of Dental Medicine has selected the dental office of Katherine Heer, D.M.D., P.C. as a community-based externship site. As reported by the Daily Bulldog, an online news site covering Franklin County, Maine, dental student Michelle Berry (CDM, ’17) will complete her rotation at Heer’s practice.

Berry is one of 59 SWAGÊÓƵ dental students participating in the inaugural Community-Based Education program. Student externs participate in 12-week rotations at 36 sites across Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont, in areas where access to healthcare is limited.

Students benefit from this unique opportunity in several ways, as they learn how to provide care for diverse patient populations, attain real-world experience, witness firsthand the need for greater access to oral health care in Northern New England and experience the importance of social responsibility and leadership as a dental professional.

Heer received her associate's degree in Dental Hygiene from Westbrook College in 1990, which provided her with the background for dental school. She is a prior Deborah Morton Endowed Scholarship Fund recipient and is also a philanthropist, funding an endowed scholarship to be shared between the SWAGÊÓƵ dental hygiene and dental medicine programs.
