Philosopher Sally Haslanger to present at SWAG视频 as 2016 David Hume Lecturer
On October 20, the SWAG视频 will host its annual David Hume Lecture, an event named in honor of the great Scottish philosopher David Hume and sponsored by the university鈥檚 Human Nature Project. This year鈥檚 speaker will be Sally Haslanger, Ph.D., a Ford Professor of Philosophy and Women鈥檚 and Gender Studies at MIT, who will present 鈥淒isrupting Ideology: Social Meaning and Social Movements.鈥 The lecture will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the St. Francis Room of the Ketchum Library on SWAG视频鈥檚 Biddeford Campus.
In the lecture, Haslanger will discuss how racism, while an ideology, is deeply rooted in social practices, and she will examine how best to disrupt such practices to achieve greater justice.
Haslanger has published on metaphysics, epistemology, feminist theory and critical race theory. Her book Resisting Reality: Social Construction and Social Critique won the Joseph B. Gittler award for work in philosophy of the social sciences. In 2015, she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and she was named the Spinoza Professor at the University of Amsterdam. In 2013-2014, she served as the president of the American Philosophical Association, Eastern Division.
