SWAGƵ injury prevention program featured on ‘207’

On November 4, 2015, WCSH’s news magazine show “207” highlighted an injury prevention program in SWAGƵ’s Doctor of Physical Therapy program.

Kirsten Buchanan, Ph.D., P.T., A.T.C., assistant clinical professor, started the program in response to the alarming statistics about girls and women and ACL injuries. 1 in 100 high school age female athletes will tear their ACLs. That number jumps to 1 in 10 in college.

Research has shown that a 20-30 minute exercise program aimed at strengthening specific muscles and proper alignment can help prevent such injuries. Buchanan and D.P.T. students have taken that program to Yarmouth where they are working with the U13, JV and Varsity girls’ soccer teams. They not only lead the athletes through the exercise program twice a week, they also measure their progress in the Motion Analysis Lab.
