Meghan May featured in ‘WGME’ story about bacteria on toys

Meghan May, Ph.D., associate professor of biomedical sciences in the SWAGÊÓƵ’s College of Osteopathic Medicine, was featured in a report on WGME about the bacteria found on children’s toys.

May, who specializes in microbiology and infectious disease, tested four different toys belonging to a local child. Her tests found several different organisms, including some that can cause illness in those who are hospitalized or have compromised immune systems.

Some of the bacteria found are extremely difficult to treat with antibiotics, and can cause infectious diseases like sepsis and pneumonia.  May’s research at SWAGÊÓƵ has focused on finding better ways to detect those drug-resistant illnesses to improve treatment decisions and increase the likelihood of survival.
