CAIEP Knowledge Exchange – Let's Talk Medications: Opportunities for Interprofessional Advocacy
Competency: Roles & Responsibilities, Communication
Your future older adult patients are an at-risk population for experiencing adverse drug events – it is important to be familiar with medication-use issues and ways to enhance the quality of care provided. Hedva Barenholtz Levy, PharmD, director of HbL PharmaConsulting in St. Louis, Missouri, author of Maybe It’s Your Medications, and joining us from SWAGÊÓƵ’s Center for Excellence in Aging and Health (CEAH) will describe the nature of polypharmacy in older adults—what it is and why it is so prevalent. She also will discuss challenges and opportunities to reduce excessive and unnecessary medication use in this population. Attendees will be able to explore and discuss this topic from an interprofessional perspective, identifying ways that different health care disciplines can advocate for our older patients regarding safe and appropriate medication use.
Participation can be applied toward students’ IP Honors Distinction.

"I feel like I am better prepared to care holistically for older adults. I recognize that there are multiple dimensions to wellness in older adults. I also recognize that I can help older adults strengthen their resiliency, as this is a modifiable ability and not an innate strength."
